Motorola has won four contracts worth US$108m to expand and upgrade wireless networks for China Mobile. Under the contract, the US group will expand GSM 900 and 1800 networks in the provinces of Hubei and Yunnan and the cities of Beijing and Tianjin. The expansions will increase subscriber capacity by 1.2m users when the work is completed at the end of this year.
China added 4.8m mobile subscribers in June, bringing the total number to 176.2m, according to the Ministry of Information Industry. The take-up was slightly higher than the 4.7m recorded in May, but down on the 2001 monthly average of 5m new subscribers. Some 3.1m new subscribers for fixed-line telephone services signed up in June, according to the ministry.
