Nanjing mayor hit by corruption crackdown

The Chinese Communist Party released an online statement Thursday reporting an investigation into Nanjing Mayor Ji Jianye for “severe violations of discipline and law,” Financial Times reported. Ji is the latest high-ranking official to get tapped by China’s anti-corruption campaign. The statement provided no further details, but such cases are typically handed over for criminal prosecution after several months. The investigation has cast a spotlight on Nanjing as the home town of Jiang Zemin, China’s top leader in the 1990s and a man believed to have wielded enormous power behind the scenes long after he stepped down a decade ago.
