Construction of a new airport for Beijing is to start in 2010, reported China Daily. Chen Guoxing, head of the Beijing Capital Airport expansion project, said the location and design scheme of the project had yet to be decided. However, he explained that it was unlikely to be situated in the municipality of Beijing, because of mountains to the west and north and a lack of suitable space elsewhere. Therefore, designers will probably choose a site in neighbouring Hebei province, with construction expected be completed in 2015.
In addition, Chen said that Beijing plans to spend Yn16.7bn to add a third terminal at the current airport. Terminal 2, which was completed in 1999, should be able to handle 35m passengers by 2005.
