Shipping containers that can be converted into apartments is the latest housing trend to hit China.
Although common in large cities along the coast and in Shenzhen, where there are an estimated 50,000-60,000 shipping container apartment units, they have just appeared in Chengdu.
The apartments are rented out for RMB18 (US$2.71) a month. Each container measures a standard 3 meters x 6 meters and weighs in at 2.6 tons. Some are stacked on top of each other to create "two-story" apartments. Each unit features two windows and a door and has a telephone cord. The bathroom behind the apartment is equipped with a shower, and the first floor has cooking facilities.
"Each apartment is its own unit. Anytime and place one is needed, it can just be picked up and moved with a crane," worker Xie Hongbin explained.
GoChengDoo reports that the containers’ steel frames make them virtually indestructible against all weather elements and earthquakes.
