New LED production Foshan "fab"

Factory to produce lights that last longer, use less power

LED LightingSemiLEDs, a Taiwan-based LED chip manufacturer, is to build a state-of-the-art fabrication facility – generally known as a fab – in Foshan. It will make LED wafers and high power LED chips using SemiLEDs’ patented vertical LED on metal technology.

The development for SemiLEDs new facility will be in three stages. The first stage which involves an investment of $96 million should be in full scale production by October 2010. Initial monthly production capacity will be 20 million 1mm x 1mm LED chips per month. Further investment and resulting production will follow during the next three years.
LED Inside explains that LEDs – light emitting diodes – are now being used in solid state lighting in areas such as street lights, and commercial and residential lighting. They have two major virtues: they are long lasting and they use much less power for a given amount of output.
SemiLEDs is a major LED chip supplier to many packaging companies in China focusing on Solid State Lighting.
