The first phase of construction was completed yesterday on a RMB 1.7
billion natural gas project delivering gas from the East China Sea to
Shanghai.
The project increased the city's gas supply by 50 percent with
new deliveries coming from the Pinghu oil and gas field.
Several Chinese
and global companies have jointly embarked on multibillion-dollar projects to further tap
East China Sea gas to supply major population centers on the east coast, including
Shanghai.
China is looking to diversify its power supply sources to
reduce its dependence on environmentally unfriendly coal.
