Chen Liangyu, named as acting mayor of Shanghai in December when former mayor Xu Kuangdi was transferred to Beijing, has been confirmed as mayor by the Municipal People’s Congress, Xinhua reported. The 56- year-old Chen is a native of Zhejiang province who worked in industry and government before becoming vice-mayor and deputy secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party.
Xu had been a popular figure in the city and his appointment to become head of the Chinese Academy of Engineering was widely seen as a form of demotion.
