A 32-year-old man died from bird flu in southern Guangdong province on March 2, China’s 15th human case and ninth fatality from the H5N1 virus, state media reported. The man, surnamed Lao, developed fever and pneumonia symptoms on February 22. He is said to have made several visits to an agricultural market as well as spending time near a live poultry slaughtering site. Of China’s more than 30 bird flu outbreaks, none have taken place in Guangdong, although there have been several confirmed cases in neighboring Hong Kong.
