No split for China Unicom – official

China has no plan to split its second largest mobile carrier, China Unicom, a spokesman with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) told official media. Du Yuanquan said media reports suggesting the government was planning to merge its GSM business into China Mobile and CDMA business into China Netcom were "groundless and irresponsible". He added that such reports having "a bad effect on the stable development of China Unicom." Telecoms analysts have speculated that China would regroup its telecom industry before announcing its policy on the release of licenses for third-generation mobile telecommunication technology.
