Jilin province is expected to see industrial profits rise as high as RMB 15 billion (US$1.81 billion) this year gdp, more than the total for the entire 1990-1999 period, according to the province's statistics bureau.
The spectacular profit is a result of the booming auto sector, which is the main contributor to the expected 10 percent GDP growth for 2003.
Auto industry output was RMB 55.9 billion (US$6.76 billion) in the first half of 2003, accounting for nearly half of Jilin's GDP. And it contributed RMB 6.5 billion (US$786 million) in profits, accounting for 70 percent of total industrial profits.
The central government has attached great importance to revitalizing Northeast China's economy.
