China comes up short when it comes to providing the financial and human resources required to combat HIV/Aids, according to the senior Aids official at the Chinese Center or Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Speaking to the Financial Times, Wu Zunyou said growing infection rates among intravenous drug addicts and sex workers was fuelling a new wave of HIV cases, particularly in Yunnan, Xinjiang, Hunan, Guangxi and Guangdong. Whereas in the 1990s, the sale of contaminated blood was the driving force behind the spread of HIV, needle drug use and sex now account for 97% of all new cases.
