NPC to moot income tax threshold

The standing committee of China's legislature will discuss a possible amendment to China's personal income tax law raising the minimum taxable income level at the 31st conference of the National People's Congress (NPC) when it begins on December 23. Legislators who will attend the meeting told China Business Net (in Chinese) that the threshold for individual income to be taxed may be raised from the current US$217 per month to US$271 or higher. In a recent survey conducted by China Youth Daily, 97% of the respondents thought it was neccessary to raise the threshold, the CPI keeps higher this year. China began imposing a personal income tax in 1993 with a cutoff point of US$109 per month, which it raised to the current US$217 in 2006.
