There is a report from Reuters — who simply could not have invented this one — that Chinese tourism authorities are seeking investment to build a novel concept attraction, the world’s first ‘women’s town,’ where men get punished for disobedience. (The illustration is NOT of a female tourist getting into the swing of things. It shows the training of a female police officer but it was the nearest we could get without being obscene.)
Yes, yes, we all know there are strange establishments where this sort of thing goes on for money but this is a tourist attraction based on history.
A tourism official told Reuters that the 2.3-square-km Longshuihu village in the Shuangqiao district of Chongqing municipality, also known as ‘women’s town,’ was based on the local traditional concept of ‘women rule and men obey.’
The official, surname Li, said by telephone, ‘Traditional women dominate and men have to be obedient in the areas of Sichuan province and Chongqing, and now we are using it as an idea to attract tourists and boost tourism. We welcome investors from overseas and nationwide to invest in our project.’
As it is going to cost something over RMB200 million ($26 million) he should not hold his breath.
The idea is that when tour groups enter the town, female tourists would play the dominant role when shopping or choosing a place to stay, and a disobedient man would be punished.
The project, begun in the end of 2005, is expected to take three to five years to finish. Great expectations. Someone, somewhere, must surely work out the type of tourist that will be attracted.
