China Telecom, the fixed-line operator that is dominant in southern China, is to build an IP communications backbone in the north of the country, reported the Financial Times. The US network equipment supplier, Cisco Systems, will supply technology and prod- ucts in a deal worth about US$2m.
The network will replace one that China Telecom was obliged to hand over to China Netcom as part of a government-ordered restructuring of the industry to introduce competition in the fixed-line sector. With China Netcom expected to expand in the south, the two companies are set to compete head on in all parts of the country.
