Overseas lawyers face crackdown

Foreign law firms could be pulled up for violating restrictions on the types of business they are involved in, according to a document issued by the Shanghai Bar Association, the Wall Street Journal reported. Overseas outfits cannot handle business concerned directly with Chinese law, but most are not heeding this bar, a posting on the association's website says. Lawyers have long been relegated to playing a consulting role, advising on regulations in their own countries and acting as intermediaries between overseas companies and local law firms. The association's statement called on the government to "take powerful measures to regulate and restrict illegal activities practiced by foreign law firms in Shanghai."
