Computer sales in China rose by almost 25 percent in the third
quarter following a slowdown attributed to the SARS scare earlier this
year.
The tremendous increase is expected to continue in the coming
quarters and has already contributed to an 11 percent year on year growth rate despite the
earlier slowdown.
During the July to September quarter 3.6 million PCs
were shipped to China, according to International Data Corp (IDC).
The
quarter also saw foreign computer makers snatch a larger market share from companies
such as Legend Group, China's largest PC maker.
Legend saw its
domestic market share dip to 27.7 percent from 28.5 percent in the second quarter. One of
its key foreign rivals, Hewlett-Packard (HP) sold 155,000 more PCs in China during the
third quarter, an increase of more than 85 percent, bringing its market share up by 1.4
percentage points to 4.3 percent.
HP was ranked the sixth best-selling
brand in China.
