People's Daily accuses foreign companies of dodging taxes

Party mouthpiece People’s Daily ran a full page of coverage and commentary on Monday accusing foreign corporations of dodging taxes in China, South China Morning Post reported. The commentary said tax-avoiding practices by some multinationals had deprived the country of enormous revenue while taking advantage of its labor, land, resources and consumer market. The accusation, which refers to taxation as “the core of national sovereignty,” follows Beijing’s recently stepped-up antitrust probes aimed primarily at foreign businesses. The People’s Daily report quoted Liao Tizhong, director-general for international taxation with the taxation administration, as saying that tax avoidance by multinationals was “hugely detrimental” to the countries in which they operated.
