Unrest in Chinese factories has spread to the Yangtze River Delta as police clashed with striking workers outside a rubber factory in Kunshan, Jiangsu province on Monday, the South China Morning Post reported. Workers said dozens were injured or detained, and accused the authorities of colluding with their employer, Taiwan-owned KOK International, to break up the protest. The strike relates to complaints over unbearable working conditions, enforced unpaid overtime, low pay and alleged non-payment of social security and a lack of cover for work-related injuries. A local government spokesman said it was a “simple case of employer-staff conflict” and that the majority of issues had already been resolved. The strike comes after similar action at two Honda parts suppliers in the Pearl River Delta city of Foshan.
