Poor turnout at Canton fair a bad omen for China trade

A weak global economy has reduced the number of exhibitioners at the Canton Fair, an event often regarded as a barometer for the strength of China’s exports, South China Morning Post reported. Participants at the fair, which opened today in the city of Guangzhou, fell by 229, the biggest drop since 2009. “The fall in the number of exhibitors hints that the initial recovery in the mainland’s export growth will be thwarted by the uncertainty in the US economy,” said Linus Yip Sheung-chi, a strategist at First Shanghai Securities. Mainland exports fell 0.3% year-on-year last month after rebounding in July and August.
