Population growth forecast to slow

The minister of the State Population and Family Planning Commission said that the annual increase in China's population is forecast to drop by 3m to 10m for the coming decade, Xinhua reported. The figures correspond with the government's aim of limiting the population to 1.4bn by 2010. The population is currently around 1.28bn and grew by an average of 13.2m a year between 1990 and 2000, according to National Bureau of Statistics figures.
