Power output starts at Three Gorges

The Three
Gorges Dam started producing hydroelectric power last month, transmitting electricity to
Shanghai and other eastern cities. AYn2bn switching station was recent-ly completed in
Changzhou, Jiangsu province, to help transfer power from Hubei province, where the dam
is situated.
The dam will help alleviate power short-ages being experienced this
summer in Shanghai and other cities. Last month, a power outage caused the number l
line of Shanghai's subway system to break down for 40 minutes during the rush
hour.
When completed in 2010, the Three Gorges project is expected to produce
84.7bn kilowatts of power a year.
