China Premier Wen Jiabao addressed government actions during the 1989 Tiananmen incident at a press conference concluding the second session of the 10th National People's Congress. Wen described the Tiananmen incident as a danger to the party and the country as a whole, saying the government's response was appropriate and stabilized the country. Wen's comments came in response to a reporter's question regarding retired People's Liberation Army doctor Jiang Yanyong's letter to the government, which asked the Communist Party to reconsider its stance toward Tiananmen student protestors. Jiang was praised during the SARS epidemic for exposing the extent of SARS' spread in Beijing.
