President Hu Jintao told Taiwanese business representatives in Xiamen, Fujian’s commercial center, that the central government "welcomes more Taiwan compatriots to come to the mainland to develop," according to state media. "Taiwanese business investment in the mainland helps improve economic returns and benefits economic and trade cooperation between the two sides of the strait," Hu said, adding that he hoped the mainland and Taiwan would soon open direct transport and mail routes.
