The visit of President Jiang Zemin to the US in October appeared to have been a success, marking a significant decrease in tension between the two countries. In the course of his meetings with President George W Bush, Jiang secured an explicit commitment to the "One China" principle, by which the US recognises that Taiwan is part of China.
The two sides also agreed to work together to disarm North Korea a policy reaffirmed in the Apec meeting in Mexico and to co-operate in the fight against terrorism. Military exchanges will be resumed and both President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney will visit China in the next year.
