An underwater tunnel
connected with Shanghai's planned fourth subway line has collapsed. causing several
buildings to tilt and subside. Officials from the Shanghai Suhway Construction Co said they
were discussing whether to restore the tunnel under the Huangpu River or change the
route. The line as planned to connect Shanghai's western suburbs with
Pudong.
One expert quoted by China Business
said the enteric line might
have to be scrapped. although this was denied by offi-cials. The newspaper said the
accident could have been asoided and was caused by poor management. A team led by
Minister of Construction Wang Guangtao was sent to investi-gate the
accident.
