Protest in Beijing over fund-raising scheme

In yet another demonstration in China, about 400 people gathered in Beijing to protest their losses in an illegal fund-raising scheme, Reuters reported. State media did not give details of the scheme, but said the protesters – who had congregated at the municipal government office – were persuaded to leave on Wednesday. Meanwhile, AP reported that police in Gansu detained 30 people for violence during a protest involving 2,000 people this week in which a crowd stormed a local Communist Party headquarters and clashed with police. In several parts of China recently there have been economic-related strikes and protests, raising fears of widening unrest.
