Millions of Chinese opposed Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council by signing Internet petitions which had gathered at least 26m signatures on four mainland portals by Tuesday, state media reported. Many Chinese are embittered by Japan's refusal to apologize fully for its wartime atrocities and for not addressing these issues in history textbooks.
