Proton eyes China plant

Malaysian automaker Proton is drawing up plans to open a joint venture assembly plant in China, Malaysian media reports said. The maker of Malaysia's "national car" faces growing competition at home turf with the dropping of import tariffs that insulated it from foreign competition. The planned venture would partner it with China's Goldstar Heavy Industrial Co, to produce 50,000 Waja cars, reports said.
