Established in 1952, the International Trade Research Institute (ITRI) is the branch of China's Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade responsible for conducting scientific research 'and providing information consultancy services. Its specific tasks are:
* To study the development trends of the world economy and trade, financial and commodity markets, as well as the theories, policies and practice of international trade;
*To examine the economy, trade and market conditions of various countries and the development of bilateral trade relations;
*To study the world market conditions for major commodities, China's foreign trade structure, and development strategies regarding China's export commodities;
* To provide consultancy services in the areas of trade and investment;
*To publish books and documents on foreign economic relations and trade; and
*To advise Chinese organisations who are dealing with economic cooperation and trade with foreign countries.
Aims
The institute stresses the importance of applying its research, so that China's open policy and its trade links with various countries overseas can be further promoted.
ITRI is a non-profit making organisation. While serving the various Chinese government departments, foreign trade enterprises and other domestic economic bodies, it also conducts research and provides consultancy and other services on behalf of foreign enterprises and research institutes.
ITRI has more than 300 staff members, one third of whom are intermediate or senior researchers. It also boasts a huge stock of reference materials, and has close contacts with research institutes both at home and abroad.
Consultancy services
* Providing market information and con-ducting market research on behalf of Chinese and foreign enterprises;
* Conducting feasibility studies on commercial and industrial projects;
* Sponsoring symposia, seminars and lectures.
Publishing
* Established under the institute is the Chinese Foreign Economic and Trade Publishing House which translates, edits and publishes books and documents on foreign economic relations and trade.
Newspapers and magazines
ITRI runs the International Economic and Trade News and the monthly magazine Intertrade (both Chinese and English editions) which are distributed both at home and abroad.
International Trade News (ITN) is a thrice-weekly business newspaper aimed at policy makers and business officials of special foreign trade Import and Export corporations and industrial and trading companies in China.
ITN aims to provide information and analysis on world economics and trade, the financial situation, international commodity markets, business developments and opportunities, new foreign high technology and products.
At least once a month, ITN publishes a special issue. These supplements focus on bilateral trade with foreign countries, foreign government economic trade policies and regulations, the latest technology, advanced industrial products, business opportunities, and the foreign industrial exhibitions to be held in China.
The circulation is about 230,000 copies per issue both for the regular issues and supplements. *
