China's national-level airlines are unlikely to face further consolidation following a statement by Yang Yuanyuan, head of the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China at the Communist Party Congress, the Wall Street Journal reported. Yang said that China wants to continue to have three major airlines in operation, adding that the state would not interfere with the affairs of local airlines. The last consolidation of Chinese airlines occured in 2002, when 10 state airlines were merged into China Air, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines.
