Swedish truck and bus maker Volvo said its Renault Trucks subsidiary signed an agreement in principle with Chinese truck maker Dongfeng Motors to establish a JV manufacturing trucks and truck parts in China.
The deal remains subject to final negotiation of price and ownership and must also be approved by Chinese authorities.
The goal is for Renault to be able to produce 7,000 trucks a year locally for the Chinese market in five years.
Dongfeng also has JVs with a number of other foreign carmakers including PSA Peugot Citroen, Nissan, Honda and South Korea's Kia.
