Retired doctors asked to work rurally

China’s Health Ministry is issuing measures such as free education to attract doctors to work in rural areas, in a bid to close the health-care gap between wealthy cities and the significantly poorer countryside, The Wall Street Journal reported. Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu said Tuesday that the ministry would roll out a new examination system that will lower standards for doctors who aim to work in villages. It will also invite doctors from large public hospitals to work in primary care facilities after they retire. China’s hospitals follow national retirement regulations, under which men must retire at 60 and women retire at 55.
