Rewards for Online Porn Informers

According to a joint statement issued by the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center and three other government departments, internet users who report to the police on websites that contain lewd and pornographic material are eligible for rewards ranging from about $145 to $1,450. The site obligingly provided phone numbers and email addresses for the public to make contact.

The government is seeking tip-offs in nine categories, including mobile WAP sites that contain obscene material and sites that provide information deemed harmful to young people.

The Wall Street Journal Blog reported Chinese internet users reacted warmly to this new measure.

Within the first day, the reporting center of the Internet Society of China received 13,000 tips through the web and 500 phone calls which is more than ten times the usual number. And so far, 3,500 tips have been confirmed.
