The total length of China’s rural roads is expected to reach 3.5 million kilometers by 2010, with the overall total for China coming to 4 million kilometers.
Already, 94% of villages in China’s eastern and central regions are accessible by road.
China has achieved remarkable progress in improving rural transportation based on massive road construction, and buses are available to more and more rural residents. According to Feng Zhenglin, vice minister of transport, there were 340,000 buses, over 140,000 passenger stations, and nearly 80,000 bus routes in China’s rural areas at the end of 2009, with the daily bus runs totaling 1 million. Buses were available in nearly 88 percent of China’s villages.
