Shanghai metro will install high-tech communications to provide safer, faster train rides. The communication-based train control technology (CBTC) is now being used on Shanghai metro line 11 following a 10-month trial.
The system uses an off-board computer to monitor all trains operating on tracks, which allows trains to be spaced closer together than on a manually controlled line.
The technology has been tested at night on empty trains for almost 10 months.
TMCNet.com reports the adoption of this cutting-edge technology is a leap forward for the Shanghai metro, and is designed to ease the pressure placed on the system by the huge number of train riders each day. Shanghai metro lines 6,7,8 and 9 may also adopt this technology in the future.
