Tibet Gilat Networks, listed in New York and based in Israel, has secured a contract with China Telecom to provide a satellite-based rural telephony system for Tibet. The initial purchase will be for a hub, 14 gateways and 1,300 very small aperture terminals (VSATs) for public call offices, with the possibility of extending the contract to up to 5,000 terminals. The system will provide voice, fax and data services to and from fixed locations via satellite.
This contract follows the successful deployment of Gilat's VSAT technology to provide a rural telephony service in Xinjiang.
