A deal has been agreed to ensure only Scottish-made whisky can be sold as Scotch in China. The deal follows longstanding efforts by trade and government officials in the UK.
The agreement will allow the whisky industry to tap into a rapidly expanding market in China, with sales expected to double over the next few years.
The registration of "Scotch whisky" as a geographical indication means the sale of the drink as Scotch in China is protected.
Vince Cable, Britain’s business secretary, said, "Scotch whisky is a brand recognized worldwide so it is important all consumers should have confidence that the product they are buying is genuine."
SkyNewsHD reports that the ruling will apply almost immediately.
