[photopress:MBA_renmin_grads.jpg,full,alignright]Senior Chinese leaders congratulated the prestigious Renmin University of China on its 70th founding anniversary. In some countries, that would make it a new university. In China, in university life, 70 years is a long time.
Wang Qishan, mayor of Beijing, said at the school’s anniversary ceremony, ‘Renmin University of China has made strenuous efforts to build itself into a prestigious comprehensive and research-oriented school in China, with a special focus on social sciences and liberal arts.’
Xu Jialu, vice-chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee attended the ceremony. Other senior Chinese leaders — Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, Zhou Yongkang — sent congratulations.
Renmin was first founded in 1937 in Shaanxi, northwest China, under the name of Shaanbei Public School. It got its present name in 1950, when it was moved to Beijing, and became the first university set up after the founding of People’s Republic of China in 1949. Since then, over 200,000 students have graduated from the university.
For many, Renmin will be remembered for the style, grace, beauty and bravery of a group of female graduates who had pictures taken which enchanted most of the world and shocked some of the more traditional, hide-bound viewers of China. The picture is run larger here than normal. Think of it as an anniversary celebration.
