Shanghai air pollution 13 times higher than WTO standard

Air pollution in Shanghai today was thirteen times the level recommended by the World Health Organization, Bloomberg reported. The city’s environmental monitoring center reported the reading for PM2.5 air pollution was 331 micrograms per cubic meter at 7 am. High levels of pollution have plagued the Yangtze river delta since late last week, exceeding several times the index used to rate air quality. China state media has blamed the air pollution on weather conditions, the use of coal in heating plants and growth in the number of vehicles.
