Work on Shanghai's 25.5km tunnel and bridge to connect Chongming Island with Shanghai proper has begun after national macroeconomic tightening measures delayed approval. The project was first scheduled to begin construction earlier this year. Current plans call for a forest to be planted on the island to raise its profile as a local tourist destination. The project includes a 9km underwater tunnel, a 6.5km elevated highway and a 10km bridge to the island.
