Shanghai, eastern China issued red alert for Typhoon Haikui

The China Meteorological Administration issued a red alert for Typhoon Haikui, the highest so far in 2012, and reported that the storm was likely to hit between the coastal cities of Ningbo and Wenzhou late Tuesday or early Wednesday, bringing with it torrential rain and strong winds for 48 hours, AP reported. According to state media, Shanghai is evacuating 200,000 people, with neighboring Zhejiang having already relocated 130,000 people. More than 30,000 ships have been called back to port, it said. Shanghai also prohibited all outdoor group activities, including construction, closed city parks and suspended summer classes. Typhoon Haikui is China’s third major storm to arrive on land in less than a week.
