Shanghai escapes worst of storm

Tropical storm Krosa caused torrential downpours in southeast China on Monday but meteorologists said the storm would not directly hit Shanghai as it moves inland, AFP reported. Krosa hit the coasts of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces on Sunday as a fully fledged typhoon, with winds of up to 126 kilometers per hour. However, it soon began to weaken and was downgraded to tropical storm status. More than 1 million people were evacuated in Fujian and Zhejiang ahead of the storm and flights were diverted or delayed. Rainfall totaled up to 200 millimeters but no deaths were reported. Five people were killed, one reported missing and dozens injured when Krosa hit Taiwan on Saturday. In September, Typhoon Wipha took two lives in China.
