Shanghai has 20% surge in container throughput

[photopress:shanghai_port.jpg,full,alignright]Shanghai International Port Group recorded a 21.72 million TEU (the standard unit) container throughput last year, a 20 percent rise compared to 2005.

Yangshan Port, where Phase I started operations in December 2005, handled 3.23 million TEUs in 2006.

The plan is to move all European services from the original Waigaoqiao Port to Yangshan Phase I starting from this month, and all South American services in October. US East Coast services are expected to be moved to Yangshan next year, after Phase II is opened.

All of which, added together, means that Shanghai will retain the title of busiest cargo port in the world for the conceivable future.
