[photopress:shanghai_port_1_2.jpg,full,alignright]In one sense that is not an exciting nor yet snazzy headline. Perhaps it should be more compelling and say ‘Shanghai shoots ahead’ which is true but not as informative.
The truth is pretty compelling. Shanghai Port’s container throughput has soared since the completion of Yangshan first and second phase. Shanghai Port’s container throughput reached 12.5 million TEUs in the first half of 2007, and thus should to exceed 25 million TEUs for the whole year.
To get that into perspective it almost certainly will make Shanghai Port the world’s second largest container port in 2007.
And with growth comes success and then expansion. Shanghai International Port Group is accelerating its acquisition of overseas and domestic ports. It plans to invest in Belgium’s Zeebrugge Port and China’s Jiujiang Port.
If one had written five years ago that Shanghai would be buying in Zeebrugge you would have laughed and laughed like a mad thing. Now it seems highly probable.
