Shanghai displaced Rotterdam as the world's largest cargo seaport, raising throughput year on year 20%, from 316m tonnes to 380m tonnes in 2004 – far ahead of Rotterdam's 354m tonnes, an 8% increase. Bloomberg said Shanghai container traffic rose 29%, to 14.6m 20-foot equivalent (teu) units over 2004; Rotterdam traffic increased 16%. Singapore, also expected to outpace the Dutch port, has yet to report its 2004 data. Unmentioned in Bloomberg's tally is Hong Kong, which used to be a contender.
