Shanghai Pudong International Airport has opened the first security facility in China that does not require a 24-hour waiting period for shipments. The 8,000 sq metre facility allows air freight shipments to be X-rayed immediately and then transferred to a protected security area where they are loaded onto pallets for onward distribution. The Chinese authorities decided that the facility's stringent security measures, which include 50 video cameras to monitor staff, were already sufficient protection against terrorism.
