Shanxi mine gas explosion kills 60

A gas explosion at the Xishui Coal Mine in Shuozhou in Shanxi province killed at least 60 miners Saturday, with 9 others still missing, state media reported. The blast buried 41 miners and caused a neighboring mine to collapse, killing 19 miners. Police detained Xishui mine operators for violating an order to cease production due to safety problems. The explosions follow by two days an accident killing 19 miners in Fengjie County, Chongqing. Premier Wen Jiabao has said Beijing will spend RMB3bn (US$363m) this year in upgrading coal mine safety measures.
