At least 43 people were killed after a fire broke out in a nightclub in Shenzhen at the weekend, AP reported. The fire was triggered by a fireworks display taking place in the King of Dancers nightclub. Many partygoers were trampled as the hundreds of attendees rushed to escape down a narrow exit aisle. An official with the Shenzhen Work Safety Bureau said at least 88 people were injured. Huang Huahua, governor of Guangdong province, blamed the club’s poor ventilation system for the high number of deaths. Meanwhile, a gas explosion in a mine in central China’s Henan province on Sunday took 37 lives. Xinfeng No.2 coal mine, located near Dengfeng city, was ordered to suspend operations as it was undergoing technical renovation. However, the mine continued production at night. A legal representative of the owning company has been detained.
