Shenzhen has won a United Nations award for being one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities, South China Morning Post said. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) decided to award the Guangdong city its Global 500 Roll of Honour for its impressive achievement of marrying rapid economic growth with environmental protection. The award is to be presented to the city on June 4 as part of UNEP’s International World Environment Day celebra- tions, for which Shenzhen had been chosen as host city.
The announcement was made a week after Shenzhen released an environmentalquality report indicating that more than half of its sea area is polluted, with Shenzhen Bay and the Pearl River estuary being the worst affected places.
