Taiwan tycoon Shi Wen-long, under attack for his pro independance stand, cut his ties with the Chi Mei Group, quitting as chairman of Chi Mei Electronics. Last month, he relinquished the chairmanship of Chi Mei Corp. Liao Chin-hsiang, who succeeded Shi, said there was no pressure from the mainland to force the change. He said Shi wanted to resign three years ago and that group had established good relations on the mainland. Shi supports President Chen Shui-bian and his ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the pro-independence Taiwan Solidarity Union. In May, the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office said businesspeople who supported Taiwan independence were not welcome on the mainland.
